AI in Test Management: Opportunities, Challenges, and Practical Use Cases with Xray

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into software test management and promises to simplify many of the common challenges teams face. In the webinar "Smart Testing with AI – Rethinking Test Management with ChatGPT & Xray", Anja and Christian demonstrated how AI—specifically ChatGPT—can be used to streamline processes, improve quality, and automate repetitive tasks.

Common Challenges in Test Management

Many teams are familiar with issues such as time pressure, extensive documentation efforts, incomplete requirements, and low reusability of test cases. These hurdles often lead to insufficient test coverage and hinder quality assurance. The webinar demonstrated how AI can provide targeted support in these areas—although with certain limitations.

Where AI Helps – and Where It Doesn’t

AI is particularly useful for structured, repetitive tasks such as generating test cases or analyzing scenarios. For example, ChatGPT can automatically generate relevant test cases from a user story or improve existing ones. It helps recognize patterns and maintain templates, which increases reusability.

However, AI is not a silver bullet: it does not understand complex business logic and relies solely on the information it receives. Missing context or vague requirements can lead to inaccurate or unusable results. That’s why prompt tuning—deliberately refining your inputs—is essential for achieving high-quality outcomes.

Practical Use Cases with ChatGPT and Xray

The webinar featured two hands-on examples:

  • Automated Test Case Generation: From a user story like “As a user, I want to be able to reset my password,” ChatGPT generated five structured test cases in table format, which can be easily copied and imported into Xray.
  • Test Case Refinement: An existing test case was revised by ChatGPT to improve readability and structure. The result can be exported as a CSV file and integrated into Xray.

Although the import into Xray is still done manually, these examples highlight how AI can reduce repetitive effort and enhance test quality.

Data Protection and Compliance When Using AI in Switzerland

Handling sensitive data is a key concern. AI tools like ChatGPT often run in the cloud, and it's not always transparent what happens to the data entered. This poses privacy and compliance risks—especially in regulated industries.

The webinar emphasized the importance of establishing clear AI policies and offering internal training to promote responsible use. Using anonymized or generic content is highly recommended; real production data should not be entered into AI tools.

As an alternative, local AI models such as Infometis’ SecureGPT can be used to retain full control over data storage and processing.

Recommendations for Effective AI Usage in Testing

  • Structured Prompts: Ensure your inputs are clear and specific to receive meaningful results.
  • Documentation: Track what works well and what doesn’t to improve AI usage across the team.
  • Team Collaboration: Encourage dialogue about AI experiences and collaboratively define usage guidelines.
  • Targeted Automation: Not every task is suitable for AI. Focus on processes where AI can add real value.

Outlook and Additional Resources

Xray has published an ebook on AI in test management, with a special focus on exploratory testing. The German version will be available soon and provides in-depth insights and practical tips.
